People's Court Blog: July 28, 2013: Watching other Shows, Animal Rescue and Weight Loss Journey Update

People's Court has been repeat episodes. The shows are still an insight to our behavior, but it is time to branch out and talk about other shows.

American Ninja Warrior

What an inspirational show! This is about people and an obstacle course. Pure skill, stamina and a little luck thrown in! The goal is to reach Mount Midoriyama in Japan and now a recreated Mount Midoriyama in Las Vegas. Here is a blog from someone training and competing:

Weight loss journey update - here it is almost one month later and I have kept off the 6 lbs. I feel really good about that. I have continued with drinking more water each day, not eating after 9 pm and eating more fruit than I usually do. Incorporating these healthier habits into my daily lifestyle has made me feel so much better. The glitch is that I have an injury and I am not able to exercise as much as I would like to. Still the slow and steady approach is a sure way to keep the weight off. I have not tried the intermittent fasting yet. I am reading about it and find it intriguing. I would like to incorporate it one day a week into my schedule. I will continue to try to eat better and limit the sweets!

Surprise Tuesday Blog: RESPECT in the Workplace: June 18, 2013

A familiar theme: Respect.

Why do people feel the need to treat each other poorly in the workplace? 

The workplace: this is somewhere you spend much of your time. You spend more time at the workplace than you do at home. Think about it, your co-workers should become a second family. Maybe they do! Family feels very comfortable to treat each other poorly, we see it all the time. People's Court is a place where we see family suing each other all the time. So why am I surprised that co-workers and bosses have the audacity to treat others with less than RESPECT.

I am at my job for many years. I have always treated my co-workers and superiors with respect and expect the same in return. It does not happen.

What happened to The Golden Rule? Do unto others as you would expect them to do unto you. This is something we learn in kindergarten or before if you have parents that teach it. The practice of public humiliation is not expected in the workplace. Someone who chooses this approach as a way to manage their staff is severely lacking in ... oh so much!

When you have good people working for you, it is time to acknowledge and appreciate them. For over twenty years, I was treated with respect and then ... a change in management. How quickly things can change.

Which brings me to the next question ... Why does someone who gets power and control abuse it?

I am thinking this is an age-old question with many answers and yet, no answers. A study in human nature. What I do know is that we are all people who deserve respect from each other. We need to be at work. We need to feel appreciated on some level. I know, I know, we get a paycheck, we should not expect thanks. But ... we should not get treated poorly. What do you think?

Friday - June 14, 2013: Roach Infestation

Monday's People Court episode had a very interesting case: it is about a roach infestation.

According to Magda, the landlord, who is suing Abe, the exterminator, for $1500.00 - there were ZILLIONS!

Magda has lived in the house for 37 years and said she has only had a roach problem once before. She hired Abe and he treated for the roaches and came back several times. She is not happy because the roaches were not dying. Abe explains that there are two processes for killing roaches: spray -  that is applied every 2 weeks or gel -  that takes 2 weeks to work and has a residual effect. He did not spray in her apartment because her husband was on oxygen and spray would not be safe.  Abe said they returned several times after the initial treatment, he never explains why he stopped going back. Obviously the problem was not solved because Magda had to hire another company to solve the problem. She does not have the written contract with her that she had with the new company but says she paid them $600.00.

Magda said the new company sprayed since her husband was doing better - she was not worried about killing him  - they have been married for 53 years!!!! Wow - that is a really long time!

Magda explains the new company solved the problem. She gets back $750.00 of the $1500.00 paid to Abe.

Very interesting that Magda does not have to show the payment to the new company, yet gets her money back. I think this is because she is very credible in explaining the situation.

Congratulations to Magda for getting rid of the roach infestation. It sounded like a nightmare to have ZILLIONS of roaches in your home. I am surprised she continued to live there until the problem was solved. What do you think?

Friday: June 7, 2013: RESPECT

Hi Readers,

Sorry to have been gone for so long. So much is happening and I have not been able to write. I am back and want to share something with you. I am fascinated by the way people treat each other in everyday life. Have you noticed that a certain level of respect for each other is MISSING!!!! How do we get it back? I am perplexed by the decline of everyday communications. Here is an example of a conversation overheard in an office:

Administrative Assistant to IT person as he/she was walking past: Excuse me, I have a stupid question. Can you help me?

IT person: There are no stupid questions, just stupid people that ask them.

Really! Is this an appropriate response to someone who is asking for help? I know the usual response to that question is: There are no stupid questions. Why on earth would the IT person not give the cliche answer or just respond: What can I help you with? The cliche answer puts people at ease. The answer given puts people down. It is insulting. In the workplace we do not expect to be insulted by our coworkers. Is this a sign of the times?

I am having a real problem with this. Please let me know what you think. Also, please share  experiences you have had with the lack of respect that seems to be prevalent in our day to day life.

People's Court Blog - Saturday - April 27 2013

A week of new shows!!!! This is great. I am so glad there are new cases. 

Here's one that makes you think about how someone can get away with being a con artist. 

Steven is suing Jeff for $3700.00. This is for the cost of a New England Patriots jersey that belonged to Tom Brady. Also, he has included the cost of authenticating the jersey.

Jeff is a huge Patriots fan. He claims the jersey is fake and that Steven is a con artist. Jeff provides so much evidence to the Judge to prove that Steven is a forger and that he uses aliases when he sells items on eBay.

Jeff purchased the jersey on eBay from Steven and tried to have it authenticated. The evidence he provides to the court is proof that the jersey cannot be authenticated. Why is Steven allowed to sell fake items on eBay? It seems the FBI and local police has been investigating. Steven says this is nonsense and he was never arrested. When Jeff contacted Steven to let him know he was not happy with the jersey, his money was refunded. Even though he got the money back he did not return the jersey. He has it with him in court and hands it over to the Judge. She does not want to smell it because she does not believe it belongs to Tom Brady!!!!!

The Judge rules that the jersey needs to be returned to Steven. She lets him know that she is watching him. Hopefully he will stop cheating people. Jeff is happy that he was able to bring Steven on national TV and let everyone know to be aware!!!!

Why do people feel the need to cheat others? It is hard enough in this difficult economy to make ends meet! To have to worry about scams and con artists is an extra burden, but one we must all be watchful of!!!!!! Buyer beware!!!!!! What do you think?

People's Court Blog * Saturday 4 - 6 - 2013

Hi everyone. I am going to post weekly. During the week there are approximately 15 court cases. I am going to pick my favorites and share my thoughts with you. Please share your thoughts about the cases I write about and other cases also.

It is so interesting to watch everyone interact with each other. There is so much to be learned as people find a way to make the wrong right. Some people are so patient waiting to  be paid or waiting for a service, others are very impatient. Some people treat others with respect, with others the disdain is palatable. 

Even though everyone should be respectful to others, it does not always happen that way. When everyone is in court, we hope they are on their best behavior. Again, this is not always the way it happens. It constantly amazes me when people disrespect the court. The Judge deserves the ultimate in respect. 

The other issue which I find amazing, is the lack of preparation. Some people do not bring any evidence. Where do they think they are going? This is the day they are in court, this is the day they need to prove their case. 

Here is a case from Friday, March 29th. A couple moves and their TV is broken. They submit the claim to their renters insurance and then decide to sue the movers. The couple cannot prove the movers broke the TV because they did not unwrap it right away. There are so many excuses on their part why they waited. When you move and there are expensive electronics, they need to be checked right away. Because they submitted the claim to their renters insurance, it appeared they broke the TV. The woman explains that she did not know how renters insurance works. Really? She also did not know what it meant to send a certified letter. Again, really? It is not that complicated. It was no surprise that they lost the case.

People's Court Blog - March 25 2013 - Monday

Hi everyone - I am back.  A new episode today, I am so happy to share my thoughts with you about these cases. 

What did you think about Aries and Wascar moving during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy? That is amazing! They are in court today suing their landlord for $3500.00. This includes their security deposit and the deposit on their new apartment and their moving expenses. WHAT? Why would their landlord be responsible to pay for their moving expenses and a deposit on their new apartment? Aries did not have an answer either!!! They moved out of their apartment because they did not get heat on a regular reliable basis. They have a baby and they did not want the baby subjected to a cold apartment. That is reasonable. I would move out too! What is not reasonable is that they moved out on or after the first of the month. They claim it was the first of the month, their landlord claims it was the 6th of the month. Either way they were there into the month of November and are responsible for the rent for the month. Since the landlord rented the apartment for November 15th, mitigating his damages, they are only responsible for half the month's rent. Also, we all learned something new today - Tenants in New York City do not have to give one month's notice to the landlord. You can tell that Edward, the landlord was surprised by this information. Live and learn!!!!! Aries and Wascar do get back $650.00 which is half of their $1300.00 security deposit. They do not get what they are asking for since it is not their landlord's responsibility to pay towards their moving expenses or their new apartment. It was their choice to move out. Good luck to Aries and Wascar in their new home.

Carol is suing Lateresia and her nephew Kristopher for $100.00. Kristopher damaged Carol's fence when he knocked it down while riding a dirt bike. They had already paid $250.00 towards the $350.00 repair bill. There is no question they are responsible to pay for the damages. They were paying Carol and then just stopped. What a shame Carol had to sue to get the last $100.00! Sometimes it seems like a waste of everyone's time to sue for a small amount of money. After all, there are court costs and the time and expense of coming to court. In this case, I agree with Carol since Kristopher should be help responsible for the cost of the damage. The judge finds in favor of Carol and Kristopher needs to finish paying for the damage he did. Carol will get the $100.00!

Keith loaned his friend of 25 years, $2600.00 for his wedding. William does not deny the loan, but claims he did not borrow that much money and he paid his friend back. Keith has a promissory note signed by William. The promissory note is great evidence for Keith. Thank goodness he has this because si much of the relationship does not make sense. Keith hired William to do electrical work in a house he was renovating. He paid William in full for the work even though William owed him money. Keith explains that there were other people involved and the loan was separate. I think he is lucky that William's testimony seems very shaky. He claims he borrowed $1100.00 and paid it back in full, paying Keith $600.00 on 2 separate dates. This would be $1200.00 and he has no proof of paying it. The Judge finds in favor of Keith for the full amount of $2600.00.  This is a good thing, Keith should get his money back. Unfortunately, the long-term friendship is over! Money, business and friendship do not mix well.
